Innovative sewer rehabilitation provider Colus recently did some work for leading property, residential, construction and services group Kier MG.
Kier MG asked Framework contractor Colus if they could carry out a pipe repair on a pipe running beneath a retaining wall in Gloucester.
Severn Trent Water had decided that it was not feasible to excavate and replace the pipework due to the time and cost of the work involved. In addition creating an 80 metre diversion of the sewer would also be an expensive exercise.
Working with Kier MG and Severn Trent Water, Colus used their expertise and knowledge to clean and repair the pipework. Colus initially carried out a CCTV drain survey to inspect the pipe and identify the problem.
The CCTV inspection found that a joint on the rubber coupling had dropped and this had led to the pipe becoming displaced.
“This type of problem is very common and is usually due to either a poor installation or issues with the surrounding ground,” comments Simon Aylott-Cleaver, Director at Colus.
Once the problem had been identified the next stage was to undertake corrective action. Using no dig pipe repair technology, Colus repaired the pipework using a localised patch repair. The team were able to access the pipe via a manhole that was 30 meters away and, using a robotic cutter to reduce the size of the displacement, a series of patch repairs were carried out to ensure the pipe was repaired and water tight.
The estimate for the work was £8,000, a huge saving on cost and time as Colus successfully completed the work over a 5 day period to the delight of the client and the local residents.
